Mid-Level Environmental Scientist (Leaking Underground Storage Tank Investigations and Remediation)

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mid-Level Environmental Scientist specializing in leaking underground storage tank (LUST) investigations and remediation. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in environmental assessments, site characterization, remediation planning, and regulatory compliance related to LUST projects. This role requires hands-on fieldwork as well as proficiency in data analysis, report writing, and client communication.

Responsibilities:

Conduct comprehensive site assessments and investigations for leaking underground storage tanks.
Perform primary onsite functions for tank removals and closures (see below)
Perform soil and groundwater sampling, monitoring, and data interpretation using industry-standard techniques and equipment.
Develop and implement remediation strategies based on site-specific conditions, regulatory requirements, and client objectives.
Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and remedial action plans in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
Coordinate with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and clients to ensure compliance and project goals are met.
Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively to achieve project milestones.
Provide technical support and guidance to junior staff members during field activities and data analysis.
Stay updated with evolving regulations, industry trends, and best practices related to LUST investigations and remediation.

Duty Description: Underground Storage Tank Removal

Responsibilities:

Initial Site Assessment:
- Conduct preliminary site inspections and assessments to determine the scope of work required for underground storage tank (UST) removal.
- Review historical records and regulatory requirements related to the USTs.
Tank Purging and Decommissioning:
- Coordinate and oversee the purging, cleaning, and decommissioning of underground storage tanks in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Ensure proper disposal of tank contents and coordinate with waste management companies as necessary.
Soil Sampling and Analysis:
- Design and execute soil sampling plans to assess potential contamination from leaked tank contents.
- Utilize appropriate sampling techniques and equipment to collect soil samples from designated locations around the USTs.
Groundwater Sampling and Monitoring:
- Implement groundwater sampling programs to evaluate the extent of contamination and potential impacts on groundwater quality.
- Analyze groundwater samples using standard laboratory procedures and interpret results to assess environmental risks.
Remediation Oversight:
- Develop and oversee remediation plans if contamination exceeds regulatory thresholds.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and stakeholders to implement remedial actions and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Closure Report Preparation:
- Compile comprehensive closure reports detailing the findings of soil and groundwater investigations, tank removal procedures, and remediation efforts.
- Submit closure reports to regulatory agencies for review and approval, ensuring all documentation meets regulatory standards and timelines.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Stay abreast of federal, state, and local environmental regulations pertaining to underground storage tanks.
- Ensure all activities and reports adhere to regulatory requirements and obtain necessary permits as required.
Client Communication and Consultation:
- Maintain regular communication with clients, providing updates on project progress, findings, and recommendations.
- Offer expert consultation and guidance on environmental compliance issues related to UST removal and site remediation.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, or related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental consulting, with specific emphasis on LUST investigations and remediation.
Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations governing underground storage tanks, hazardous materials, and environmental protection (e.g., EPA, RCRA, CERCLA).
Proven experience in conducting fieldwork, including soil and groundwater sampling, monitoring well installation, and remediation system operation.
Proficiency in data analysis, GIS software, and environmental modeling tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical reports and interact professionally with clients, regulators, and team members.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional certifications such as Professional Geologist (PG), Professional Engineer (PE), or similar relevant certifications.
Experience with risk assessment methodologies and human health and ecological risk evaluations.
Familiarity with vapor intrusion assessments and mitigation strategies.
Prior experience in project management, including budgeting and proposal development.
